INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital's veterinary internship program was established in 1986. The practice currently offers 11 hospital, 5 ambulatory,1 podiatry internship and 1 Medicine Fellow annually. These internships are intended to provide each intern with the foundation to pursue a residency program or enter private practice. Interns have been placed in residency programs for surgery, internal medicine, anesthesiology, theriogenology, radiology and ophthalmology. Through the years, interns have gone on to successful careers in general ambulatory practice, surgery, anesthesia, and internal medicine in both academia and private practice. All interns are encouraged to do a research project and many have presented papers at AAEP and other national meetings in subsequent years.

The hospital interns rotate through the surgery, medicine, and anesthesia services. Primary responsibilities will include diagnostics and care of hospital patients, emergency duty, anesthesia, radiology, and assisting with lameness exams, medicine procedures and surgery.

The ambulatory interns work primarily with the five most senior ambulatory clinicians, the two theriogenologists and the two veterinary podiatrists. The interns will assist and observe routine reproductive work, neonatal and foal evaluation and medicine, basic lameness exams, radiology, purchase exams, and sales work. They will also rotate on emergency duty. In the off-season (July through December) ambulatory interns have brief hospital rotations.

Internships are salaried positions, with benefits including health insurance, professional liability insurance, 1 week paid vacation, and expenses paid for one approved veterinary conference. For specific details on salary, benefits, and additional information, please see our internship program listing posted in Avenues on the American Association of Equine Practitioners website (www.aaep.org).

Internships are for one year and run from June to June. Applications are accepted in the fall of each year. Application deadline for the 2009-2010 internship is November 16, 2008. Notification of acceptance is in early December.

To apply for a Hospital internship position, please send a curriculum vitae, letter of intent, your veterinary school transcripts and 3 letters of reference to Starlee Smith at ssmith@roodandriddle.com. EXTERNSHIP PROGRAM

Rood & Riddle offers to veterinary students an externship program that provides a clinical experience to satisfy the externship requirements for their degree. As a private clinic the amount of actual "hands-on" experience is limited. However, there is an enormous amount of information to be gained by observation and exposure to our heavy caseload. Clinicians, interns and technicians make every effort to explain hospital cases and procedures whenever possible. Externs work with hospital clinicians or ambulatory practitioners on a rotational basis. Externs have the opportunity to observe equine specialists in surgery, anesthesiology, internal medicine, cardiology, ophthalmology and reproduction. Limited on-site housing is provided at no cost to the student, and must be reserved when scheduling an externship. Externs may stay up to one month. Externs are scheduled to rotate through the surgery, internal medicine, theriogenology, and ambulatory services, but may request an emphasis on one particular area, if desired.

To request an externship application, contact us at externships@roodandriddle.com. The student must also have a letter of reference from a professor sent to Starlee Smith, Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital, P.O. Box 12070, Lexington, KY 40580. After the reference letter and applications are received, externships are approved and notifications and date confirmations sent to students. For information about externships, please contact us at externships@roodandriddle.com.

VETERINARY TECHNICIAN EXTERNSHIPS

Rood & Riddle offers an externship program for students enrolled in accredited Veterinary Technician curriculums. The program is designed to provide students an off campus experience under the supervision of a licensed veterinary technician. A period of clinical experience introduces the veterinary technician student to the various daily activities of an equine veterinary technician in the workplace. Students rotate through all areas of the hospital including radiology, surgery, medicine, reproduction, laboratory and ambulatory practice. Time frames are arranged on an individual basis to fit each students needs and schedules. The externship is mainly observation based with some hands on experience when the situation permits. Faculty from the respective colleges monitor the clinical affiliation via phone or visits on a regular basis throughout the program. Limited on-site housing is provided at no cost to the student, and must be reserved when scheduling an externship. If you are interested in an externship please contact Sheri Miller, LVT, RVT at (859) 233-0371 or by e-mail at smiller@roodandriddle.com.
