Three hundred and sixty third year veterinary students traveled to Lexington, Kentucky September 2-4, for the ninth annual Opportunities in Equine Practice Seminar (OEPS). The annual seminar, hosted by Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital, is supported by the AAEP Foundation, industry partners and equine practitioners from across the United States and Canada.
In response to the declining numbers of new veterinary students entering the equine field, OEPS was established in 2003 as a recruitment venue to encourage veterinary students to consider a career in equine practice. Since that time OEPS has evolved in response to the economy and current trends with a program designed to provide professional guidance, advice and mentorship opportunities for students interested in equine careers.
This year’s program featured lectures addressing the changing face of equine practice, financial advice for managing student and business loans, making the most of externship and internship opportunities, and testimonials from practitioners about their careers in various fields of equine practice.
Another highlight of OEPS is the Practice Exhibit section. Thirty five practices were in attendance to showcase their externship and internship opportunities. This year’s exhibit section received high praise on student exit surveys citing the personal time with exhibiting practitioners as the most important element of the weekend.

Tours of area horse farms and equine hospitals and social events to build camaraderie in the equine practitioner community were also included in the weekend.
"It was important to get the message out to these students that although the job market is uncertain right now, equine practice is not going away,” stated OEPS host, Dr. Bill Rood. "This year’s presenters emphasized finding mentors and working hard as key elements to success with solid business and financial advice to empower students to follow their passion for equine practice.”
OEPS is an annual event held over Labor Day Weekend. For more information, please visit
