Ultrasound is a valuable imaging tool for evaluating and diagnosing many different conditions and monitoring healing progress.  Ultrasound uses acoustic waves to produce a real time image of a wide variety of anatomic structures.  One of the most common uses of ultrasonography is to monitor reproductive cycles and pregnancy in the broodmare.  Musculoskeletal structures such as tendons, ligaments, joints, and bone surfaces may be evaluated for signs of injury or infection.  The abdomen and thorax may be assessed for conditions including pneumonia, gastrointestinal tract abnormalities, cardiac disease, and umbilical infection.  Both hospital and ambulatory veterinarians are equipped with digital ultrasound machines.
