AMBULATORY VETERINARY INTERNSHIP 2023-2024
 

Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital is seeking applicants for ambulatory interns for the 2023-2024 year.The internships would commence on or about June 5th, 2023 and continue for 53 weeks. The internships would suit individuals with an interest in reproductive medicine and general practice.

Upon completion of the internship, each intern should have the foundation to enter private ambulatory practice or a theriogenology residency program. The goal of the Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital is to provide the highest quality medical and surgical care possible for our patients and the best possible service for our clients. The interns play a vital role in achieving these goals and are directly involved in case work-up, management and treatment. The interns become comfortable with client communication, and referral cases provide an opportunity to observe and participate as cases are treated in the hospital. The intern is assigned one or more senior clinician mentors who work directly with the intern and are always available for consultation.

The ambulatory interns work primarily with a senior ambulatory mentor but assist and shadow other practitioners. They provide herd health to our ambulatory clients as well as help with reproductive evaluations and treatments, neonatal and foal evaluation and treatment, lameness and pre-purchase exams, sales radiographs and evaluations. Interns are involved with our emergency service and rotate on emergency duty for the ambulatory practice. Opportunities to follow field cases into the hospital are always available, and interns are encouraged to work with clinicians in their areas of interest. The ambulatory internships is designed to expose the interns to a large and variable caseload with the goal of establishing solid diagnostic skills and critical thinking in a field setting. Exposure to a large grouexperiencedience clinicians in all equine disciplines will facilitate a broader knowledge base and serve as a source and referral base in the future.

Applicants must have graduated from an accredited veterinary school prior to the commencement of the internship and have the ability to obtain a Kentucky Veterinary License.

THERIO LAB TECHNICIAN

The lab technicians will assist our theriogenologists with advanced reproduction procedures in addition to assisting with everyday lab responsibilities in our fast-paced reproduction department. This position is set in a team environment.

2023 NURSING STAFF ASSISTANTS

We are currently looking for Equine Nursing Staff for the 2023 season, starting in January.  This is a full-time position with competitive benefits.  Nursing staff assistants must be available for at least 36 to 48 hours a week (depending on the time of year) and have a flexible schedule.

Nursing assistants will work with a variety of equine patients along with an experienced team of nurses and doctors. This is a fast-paced, hands-on position.  Work mostly indoors with some outside traveling from barn to barn/other areas as needed.  The nursing staff's primary focus is ensuring the RREH patients consistently receive top-quality care in the form of monitoring vitals/comfort levels, administering medications/fluids, walking/grooming/feeding/cleaning, and assisting with procedures. Nursing staff members work with a variety of breeds, from miniature horses and draft types, as well as all ages - neonates to geriatrics to ensure all receive the care needed to recover from surgery or illness.

 

 Primary Duties

  • Duties vary from barn to barn and include working with horses of all ages and occasionally different large animal species.
  • Following the clinician's orders and making a treatment list.
  • Preparing and administering medications (via multiple routes, i.e., IV, PO, IM, SQ, IN, etc).
  • Monitoring patients' vital signs and reporting any abnormalities or concerns to the area leader and charge nurse.
  • Monitoring fluids by setting accurate drip rates, making fluids, and setting up and taking down fluid set ups.
  • Pulling blood from an intravenous catheter and performing/monitoring basic lab tests such as PCV/TP, lactate, and blood glucose levels.
  • Assisting veterinarians and other areas with in-hospital cases in various departments as needed and as bio-security permits
  • Walking, watering, feeding, and grooming patients; picking stalls as needed.
  • Cleaning assigned barn pharmacies, nearby treatment areas, and equipment.
  • End of shift duties, ensure fluids and supplies are stocked, pharmacies cleaned, carts are stocked and clean, and stall side areas and carts are stocked and cleaned.
  • On occasion, help prepare medications for the next shift.
  • Follow bio-security protocol and RREH patient care standards.
  • Attending mandatory meetings.
  • Reading and responding to emails regarding updates and changes.
  • Open to continuous on-the-job training.
  • Handling all breeds and ages of horses, in and out of stalls. Restraining horses for procedures. 
  • Be familiar with RREH manuals and protocols. 
  • Any other tasks as assigned by clinicians, area leaders, charge nurses, and technician managers.

Requirements

  • - High school diploma or equivalent
  • - Minimum of 1 year handling horses other than own
  • - Basic understanding of math
  • - Ability to consistently lift 50-75lbs unassisted
  • - Ability to bend over/stand/sit for long periods of time

SURGERY DEPARTMENT LICENSED VETERINARY TECHNICIAN

Technicians provide pre-operative care for surgery patients, assist the anesthesia team with pre-operative physicals and induction, and maintain operating room stock and sterilization. Technicians will also assist surgeons while maintaining sterile and aseptic technique and ensure surgical instrumentation is kept appropriately.

Part-time seasonal help starting mid-January 2023 to handle patients and general equine duties in a fast-paced environment. The hours and department vary from day to day. Weekday positions typically start around 8 am and end in the late afternoon. Weekend hours begin early morning and end in the early afternoon.

EQUINE AMBULATORY ASSISTANT

Interviewing for spring. These are daytime, mostly full-time, with competitive benefits.  There is a set start time for the day but the end time varies based on the veterinarian’s schedule and time of year.  Hours are mostly Monday through Friday, with a few weekends a year required or Friday through Sunday.  Assistants will primarily be assigned to one veterinarian and will travel to farms throughout Central Kentucky and assist with various procedures.  Previous horse-handling experience is required.
