PODIATRY

TITLE: Equine Scientist Podiatry Lexington, KY

DUTIES: Develop, implement and train staff, clients, and community on improved practices related to equine foot care, maintenance and treatment, including developing specific training schedules and method for each animal, selection of proper shoes, trimming and care of feet to encourage natural movement, and forging and shaping shoes. Give injury seminars and write articles/papers for industry use. Conduct research regarding optimal practices for podiatry department, including those related to trimming, shoeing, health and overall well-being of the equine feet. Prepare reports and recommendations for veterinarians and podiatry staff on best podiatry practices for hospital and specific equine population. Perform fabrication and fitting of equine limb braces and corrective orthopedic devices. 50% to 60% Domestic and International Travel required.

REQUIREMENTS: A bachelor's degree in Equine Studies or related field is required.  However the employer will accept two years of equine farrier experience in lieu of the bachelor's degree, This position also requires six months experience tutoring or instructing in farrier skills in a formal education setting which must include instruction in shoeing skills, biomechanics of the hoof, internal anatomy of the lower limb and hoof capsule of a horse, remedial shoeing. Must be Certified Journeyman Farrier (AFA certification).
